In Praise of Distraction

We spend almost half our waking life in a state of distraction so let's get to know this aspect of ourselves.

In this interactive workshop, we will learn more about the phenomenon of mind-wandering and try some simple experiments using the portable laboratory of our own mind and experience for ourselves how meditation can help us to work with our distraction and make friends with our wandering mind.

We will also hear from Marieke how difficult it is to teach computers to be distracted and how AI improves by learning to get distracted.

Stress & Burnout: Understanding & Loving Yourself

By understanding what stress actually is and how our mind and body respond to it, we can empower ourselves by how we think about it, react to it and be with it. In this special class meditation teachers Davide Piai & Kimberly Poppe, who have lived through burn out themselves, will share some of what they have found most helpful, including a simple mindfulness practice as well as how you can be loving and compassionate to yourself when you are struggling. It is also a space to cultivate community—to connect with others facing similar challenges for encouragement and support!

In collaboration with the wonderful Kimberly Poppe.

€15 euros or free for Delight Yoga members.
Registration open here from 4 November.

Eureka!

Unleash your brain's creativity and bring about Eureka Moments.

Creativity is  key  for solution finding and our brain has an incredible capacity to be creative and solve problems. We have all experienced this from time to time: in the most unexpected moment we had an insight that was the answer to question or problem that we were dragging around with us.

We can bring about the conditions for these moments to be more frequent and increase our capacity to recognise them and leverage their power.

How does mindfulness affect stress and burnout?

How does mindfulness affect stress and burnout?

Stress is a non-specific response of the body to any demand for change linked with perceived threats. The brain is a target for stress and stress-related hormones. It undergoes functional and structural remodelling in response to stress in a manner that is adaptive under normal circumstances but can lead to damage when stress is excessive. Mindfulness practice reduces stress by improving self-regulation, which includes at least three components that interact closely: enhanced attention control, improved emotion regulation and altered self-awareness.

What is a restful mind?

To reduce stress and prevent burnout we need rest but what is a restful mind? With eyes closed, removed from external distraction it is common for the mind to experience a relentless stream of thoughts & emotions without much effort. Given the heavy demand of modern life on cognitive load, managing the onslaught of ongoing sensory and mental events throughout daily life and improving efficiency of mental processing is of high concern.
